Retrolental Fibroplasia in Association with Mental Defect* By

چکیده

RETROLENTAL fibroplasia is a major cause of blindness in children. It is usually found in premature children; that is to say, in those with a birthweight of under 5j lb (2,500 g.). In the years that followed Terry's original description the incidence of the disease rose steeply and alarmingly. Krause (1955) has estimated that 10,000 children are partly or completely blind from retrolental fibroplasia in the United States of America and that half of all blind children under 7 years of age are blind because of this condition. A vast literature soon grew up around the subject and a great many possible causes for the condition were investigated, but it was not until 1951 that Campbell, in Australia, showed that the condition occurred in premature children who were nutsed in high concentrations of oxygen; when she curtailed the administration of oxygen, no further cases occurred. These findings were shortly confirmed everywhere and the role of oxygen in the production of most of the .cases of retrolental fibroplasia was established beyond doubt. Thus, in the majority of cases, retrolental fibroplasia is a disease of the eyes induced in premature babies by the administration of excessive amounts of oxygen.

The association of retrolental fibroplasia with cerebral diplegia.

Both retrolental fibroplasia and cerebral diplegia are known to occur more frequently in infants born prematurely than in those born at term, and the chance association of the two conditions might therefore be expected in a small number of premature infants. In the course of two contemporary investigations, the first a survey of the occurrence of retrolental fibroplasia in the City of Edinburgh...

Electroencephalography in retrolental fibroplasia.

Some children with severe retrolental fibroplasia have mental retardation. It is difficult to determine whether this retarda tion is based only on the loss of vision or whether it is related to cerebral damage. With the hope that electroencephalography would give some evidence that would help to separate these factors, a series of children with severe retrolental fibroplasia in cicatricial sta...

Letter to the Editor Pineal Effect on Longevity

A RECENT study of survivorship among the blind in Massachusetts [1] reveals that blind persons under 65 suffering from retrolental fibroplasia had a significantly better survivorship than other blind individuals . This may be the result of a pineal effect upon longevity . Ten year survival rates for major affections in the Massachusetts study (see Table 1) reveal that blind males under 65 with ...

Mechanism of retrolental fibroplasia.

TERRY (1942-48) published the first papers on a peculiar condition occurring in the eyes of premature infants, for which he coined the term " retrolental fibroplasia ". Since then about one hundred papers on this condition have appeared, interest having been aroused amongst paediatricians and obstetricians as well as ophthalmologists. Terry's observations have evoked much research, but the exac...
